The book

In 1999, the famed Hungarian choreographer refreshed his ten-year-old French troupe by taking on young Hungarian dancers, transforming it into a French-Hungarian international team, active both in Paris and Budapest. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of this event, the dance critic Márta Péter wrote and edited a book which not only contains exceptional material for the small circle of professionals, records the defining events of the artistic career and oeuvre (listing choreographies, premieres, biographical data, the names of dancers and co-workers, etc.), and provides the starting point for future research, but also involves the wider public and fans. The interview in the book reveals an intimate narrative of Frenák, the common man, while the analytic essays on his choreographies offer the reader with a knack for such things a good opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Frenák’s oeuvre and of the genre itself.

The photo material is also dominated by the combination of his personal and artistic experience. Besides well-known and carefully composed photos taken at shows, the book includes rare and never-before-published snapshots that allow us to catch a glimpse of more intimate details. These pictures, some more personal and lyrical, others more straightforward, fit well with the emotional and intellectual landscape within Mátyás Varga’s poem.
